Rat Race Run Britannia - Week 2, day 3 - Hay-on-Wye to Bishop's Castle

When the wheels came off

Distance: 30.55km (total so far 528.63km)
Total climb: 744m (total so far 11,404m)
Steps: 38,063(total so far 648,189)

This wasn't a good day. It was never going to be a particularly interesting one - it was a day mostly of roads, which was a bit of a comedown after the glory of the Black Mountains the previous day.

But the main issue was that I just wasn't with it - I was walking along, but not really looking around me. We did see this carved owl - I've seen these before when someone has cut a tree down, and usually in a position where they can be easily seen, but this one was just sitting in undergrowth at the side of the road.

However, that was the last photo I took that day - I just wasn't on the job, and on a day walking along roads you need to be. I baled at lunchtime - a pity, as that was the end of my "complete every day" streak, but it was going to happen at some time.

Andy and Martin's Excellent Adventure

  We're going on an adventure! This is something we've been planning for four years now (possibly longer in Andy's case!) and would have happened last summer except for Andy's ankle injury. It may be considered a little mad by the average reader. The adventure is to run from Lands End to John O'Groats as part of Rat Race Run Britannia . This is an ultra ultra-marathon - it involves running for 6 days and resting for one, repeated for 5 weeks. All except for week one, where they kindly give us an extra day - and its the longest day of the trip. Aren't they nice! The expedition is fully supported - feed stations at intervals, and accommodation organised every night. There is a support team working to help us get round, so we have every assistance we can have to do as much as possible. We're treating this as an adventure to enjoy as much as possible. Rat Race Run Britannia - Week 1, day 7 - Bridgwater to Bristol

The longest day Distance: 68.75km (total so far 386.35km) Total climb: 1082m (total so far 8279m) Steps: 80,542 (total so far 472, 628) Also: Number of ice creams: 0 Number of times chased by angry goose: 1 Number of north Somerset drivers who tried to kill me: 13 (approx) Normally on Run Britannia (if anything could be said to be normal on Run Britannia) we would run for 6 days, then get a rest day. But the first week was different - to make the schedule fit, not only did we get an extra day, but it was also the longest day we would do during the entire expedition. Officially, it was 63km. It ended up rather further than that. Bridgwater to Cheddar When we started this day, we wanted a day with the fewest possible navigation issues so that we had as little as possible waste mileage.
